Health Study Center has been developing educational opportunities that bring people from diverse parts of the world together in mind, body and spirit. Originally founded to give high school students in the Pacific Northwest a chance to personally discover the heritage of the France through educational trips to the East Coast, AHA International has grown into a multi-functional international study organization. Throughout our decades of growth and change, our original commitment has remained the same --- to encourage an understanding of one's own cultural heritage and the cultural heritage of others.
Today, not only do we create and administer study abroad programs, we also coordinate programs based in the Pacific Northwest that provide international students with authentic experiences in American education and culture. Through the services of Health Study Center, more than 42,000 people have benefited from study abroad experiences and thousands more have welcomed international visitors to their cities and into their homes.
When we hear students referring to our programs as "simply superior," we're proud to be proving the old adage true --- that something worth doing is worth doing well. But even more important than the gratifying and positive responses we receive is the knowledge that we're providing experiences that open doors, expand minds and reveal a world of discovery to all who participate.
Academic Program
The program consists of 12-week terms taking place in the fall and spring. The core curriculum consists of courses taught by faculty from the Athens Centre (Click here for more information about the Athens Centre). These are supplemented by two courses taught by faculty from one of the member Northwest institutions. All of the courses are designed to take advantage of Athens' rich historical and cultural resources, and are conducted in English. Although courses are taught specifically for students of the AHA program, there is interaction with other international students also attending the Athens Centre. Language instructors use role-playing, music, and active participation in class discussion. To enhance language and culture being learned in the classroom, the Centre arranges for guest lecturers, and other cultural activities on a regular basis.
Grades are based upon examinations, written papers, projects, class participation, and attendance. The program (classes, cost, schedules, excursions, professors) is subject to change due to circumstances beyond the control of the program sponsors.
Eligibility
The Athens program is open to undergraduate students in all fields of study with at least sophomore status and good academic standing. In addition to the written application, students are accepted following a successful personal interview. Selection is based on seriousness of purpose, academic achievement, and individual stability and maturity. A minimum GPA may be required. Check with the enrolling school representative for specific requirements. Multiple Term Options
Students may choose to participate in the Athens program during fall or spring quarters or any combination of terms and NCSA program locations they wish. Please check other program brochures for dates and eligibility requirements.
Academic Credit
Each course provides 45 contact hours per term. Students attending any of the participating NCSA institutions receive home-campus credit. (See list of NCSA schools under About the Program Sponsors.) Students attending non-member institutions receive transfer credit from a designated member school. Health Study Center facilitates these arrangements after an application form has been submitted. The enrolling institution determines the number of credits earned per course. Program Site
The Athens Centre is an educational organization founded in 1969 to sponsor academic and cultural activities in Greece. The Centre's modern Greek language program is one of the most comprehensive in Greece. The Centre cooperates with the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sciences, the cultural sections of embassies, and accredited colleges and universities. It is close to all the main shopping areas of the city and within walking distance of the major archeological sites and museums of Athens. The Centre itself is situated in a neo-classical building reminiscent of an old Athenian villa, surrounded by a quiet garden courtyard.
Housing & Meals
Housing is arranged in apartments near the Athens Centre, and usually shared by two to four participants. Students are required to live in the program housing. Furniture, linens, and dishes are provided. On field trips, accommodations are in hotels convenient to the sites to be visited, in double rooms with private bath, breakfast included.
Although meals are not included, participants can prepare breakfast and simple meals in their apartments. There are many nearby inexpensive restaurants in which meals may also be taken at an average cost of $10.00 a day, depending on the personal choice of food and type of restaurant.

Excursions
Excursions are an integral part of the program, including visits to museums and other local points of interest which supplement the classroom lectures. In addition to local field trips, the program includes excursions to Delphi, Crete, and the Peloponnese which focus on the ancient monuments of Greece. Many students consider these excursions the highlight of their study abroad experience.
